thank
(00:00:16)
you two years ago I launched a campaign
(00:00:21)
called he for she at the UN in New
(00:00:25)
York I was very nervous before that
(00:00:28)
speech the nerves were followed by a
(00:00:31)
tremendous High immediately afterwards
(00:00:35)
and a crashing low a few days after
(00:00:38)
that my best hopes and my worst fears
(00:00:43)
were confirmed all at
(00:00:45)
once I had opened Pandora's Box to a
(00:00:49)
standing ovation and almost
(00:00:52)
simultaneously a level of critique I had
(00:00:55)
never experienced in my life and the
(00:00:58)
beginning of what would come a series of
(00:01:03)
threats the last two years have been a
(00:01:06)
baptism of fire to say the least where I
(00:01:10)
learned just how little I know and also
(00:01:15)
how
(00:01:16)
much it was my scary First Step as an
(00:01:21)
activist a word I never imagined that I
(00:01:24)
would use to describe
(00:01:27)
myself so reading the applications of
(00:01:30)
active ists who applied here for one
(00:01:32)
Young World scholarships was surprising
(00:01:36)
to
(00:01:37)
me here I was reading the stories of
(00:01:41)
people from nearly 200 different
(00:01:44)
countries from around the
(00:01:46)
world with experiences that I I couldn't
(00:01:50)
even imagine I mean I really just they
(00:01:53)
were so out of this world to
(00:01:56)
me and
(00:01:58)
yet there no notes look like my
(00:02:03)
notes the same themes
(00:02:06)
emerged over and over and over
(00:02:11)
again there was so much overlap with the
(00:02:15)
things that I had been
(00:02:17)
thinking about and that I had been
(00:02:19)
struggling
(00:02:20)
with because the truth is it had never
(00:02:24)
been about being an
(00:02:27)
activist it was about the choice to make
(00:02:31)
myself
(00:02:32)
visible and the choices that you made to
(00:02:36)
do that
(00:02:39)
too apart from the significant progress
(00:02:42)
the world has made in the cause for
(00:02:45)
equality the best thing about the last
(00:02:47)
two years has been this finding people
(00:02:51)
from such disperate experiences and
(00:02:56)
communities that I found that I have
(00:02:59)
something in common
(00:03:02)
with this is a community of
(00:03:06)
artists spiritual teachers
(00:03:09)
dreamers thinkers doers who work
(00:03:14)
together and support each
(00:03:17)
other for the first time in my life I
(00:03:21)
found my
(00:03:22)
Sisterhood A brotherhood whatever
(00:03:25)
however you want to describe it I found
(00:03:28)
my tribe
(00:03:37)
My Hope for you while you here is that
(00:03:42)
you will find some of your tribe
(00:03:44)
too I really needed
(00:03:48)
mine Bobby Kennedy when he was Senator
(00:03:52)
for New York
(00:03:54)
said each time a man or woman stands up
(00:03:59)
for an ideal
(00:04:01)
or acts to improve the lots of others or
(00:04:05)
strikes out against
(00:04:07)
Injustice he sends forth a tiny Ripple
(00:04:11)
of
(00:04:12)
Hope and Crossing each other from a
(00:04:14)
million different centers of energy
(00:04:17)
those ripples build a current that can
(00:04:19)
sweep down the mightiest wall of
(00:04:23)
Oppression and
(00:04:27)
resistance that's what we are doing
(00:04:30)
doing we the entire spectrum of the
(00:04:34)
feminist movement are building an
(00:04:37)
Unstoppable
(00:04:39)
current for which we need ripples of
(00:04:42)
Hope from every age race ability Walk of
(00:04:47)
Life from every human
(00:04:53)
experience I feel gender equality is as
(00:04:58)
important as any of the other goals that
(00:05:01)
we are here to discuss and actually if
(00:05:05)
anything it is even more important
(00:05:09)
because it intersects with every single
(00:05:12)
other issue that we
(00:05:15)
Face we all have feminine and masculine
(00:05:20)
energies within
(00:05:23)
us and both forces need to be lifted up
(00:05:28)
respected they need to work together in
(00:05:32)
order to make the world go
(00:05:35)
round each of you are here at one Young
(00:05:39)
World because you do something
(00:05:42)
important and it is so exciting to see
(00:05:45)
you all come together in one room
(00:05:48)
because one Young World isn't about
(00:05:49)
saying what I each of us individually
(00:05:53)
can do but what we can
(00:05:57)
do working together supporting in and
(00:06:00)
listening to each
(00:06:03)
other it's in that spirit that I am
(00:06:07)
delighted to introduce nine activists
(00:06:11)
who were the first recipients of a one
(00:06:13)
Young World scholarship that I'm very
(00:06:16)
honored to have in my
(00:06:18)
name they are working to secure real
(00:06:21)
progress towards a gender equal world
(00:06:24)
and I hope that their stories will
(00:06:26)
inspire you as much as they have
(00:06:29)
inspired me me in a moment I'm going to
(00:06:32)
ask them to come onto the
(00:06:34)
stage but before I
(00:06:36)
do I want to offer a few statements of
(00:06:39)
my own that I have struggled with and
(00:06:43)
continue to struggle with on a daily
(00:06:45)
basis um but that I have found
(00:06:49)
inspiring I want to ask you to take a
(00:06:51)
moment you can keep your eyes closed or
(00:06:55)
keep them
(00:06:56)
open um and ask your s if these have any
(00:07:01)
truth for you in
(00:07:05)
them I am willing to be
(00:07:10)
seen I am willing to speak
(00:07:16)
up I'm willing to keep
(00:07:22)
going I'm willing to listen to what
(00:07:24)
others have to
(00:07:27)
say I'm willing to go forward even when
(00:07:31)
I feel
(00:07:34)
alone I am willing to go to bed each
(00:07:37)
night at peace with
(00:07:42)
myself I am willing to be my
(00:07:46)
biggest bestest most powerful
(00:07:55)
self these seven statements scare the
(00:07:58)
absolute out of
(00:08:01)
me but I know that they are at the Crux
(00:08:05)
of it all at the end of the day and when
(00:08:09)
all is said and
(00:08:11)
done I know that these are the ways that
(00:08:15)
I want to have lived my
(00:08:18)
life I know each one of you probably
(00:08:21)
will have encountered one of these
(00:08:22)
statements in the last 48 hours and if
(00:08:26)
you have thank you for being here I
(00:08:30)
appreciate it it's truly an honor to be
(00:08:34)
here with you all thank you
