(00:00:12)
English. That's what we learn here on
(00:00:15)
this YouTube channel. If you are new,
(00:00:17)
hi. I'm Vanessa and here on my YouTube
(00:00:20)
channel, you will learn real daily life
(00:00:22)
English. Not that textbook stuff, but
(00:00:25)
real English. And today, guess what you
(00:00:28)
are going to do? You're going to join me
(00:00:30)
as I do one of my least favorite chores,
(00:00:34)
which is changing the sheets on my bed.
(00:00:38)
I just realized
(00:00:40)
this shirt and this comforter are uh
(00:00:43)
quite busy, but that's okay. You are
(00:00:46)
going to learn real life English today,
(00:00:48)
and I can't wait to teach you all about
(00:00:51)
it. And like usual, I have created a
(00:00:53)
free PDF worksheet with all of today's
(00:00:56)
important vocabulary expressions, sample
(00:01:00)
sentences, and when you download this
(00:01:03)
free PDF worksheet, you're going to get
(00:01:05)
a bonus audio version of today's lesson.
(00:01:09)
That means that you can download the
(00:01:11)
audio version of today's lesson, kind of
(00:01:13)
like a mini podcast episode, and you can
(00:01:16)
listen to it wherever you want. Maybe
(00:01:18)
while you're changing the sheets.
(00:01:20)
Amazing.
(00:01:22)
So, how can you get this free worksheet?
(00:01:24)
All you need to do is click the link in
(00:01:26)
the description, enter your name and
(00:01:29)
email address, and voila, just like
(00:01:31)
that, the PDF worksheet and bonus audio
(00:01:35)
version will land in your email inbox.
(00:01:38)
And the cool thing is you never have to
(00:01:40)
sign up for my free worksheets ever
(00:01:42)
again. I will automatically send them to
(00:01:45)
you every single week in your email
(00:01:47)
inbox. It is my gift to you. So, click
(00:01:50)
on the link in the description to get
(00:01:51)
the free worksheet for today's lesson.
(00:01:54)
So, to get started changing the sheets,
(00:01:56)
I have to have a couple things. I have
(00:01:58)
to have some clean sheets prepared. And
(00:02:02)
I also need a laundry basket. This is
(00:02:05)
where we're going to put the dirty
(00:02:07)
sheets. They're not really that dirty,
(00:02:10)
but you know what? It's a good idea to
(00:02:12)
change your sheets every now and then,
(00:02:15)
and it's something that I put off. I
(00:02:18)
should do it probably every other week.
(00:02:21)
That's the goal. But I put it off except
(00:02:24)
for today. In today's lesson, I am not
(00:02:26)
putting it off anymore. This is for you.
(00:02:29)
So, the first thing that we need to do
(00:02:31)
is we need to
(00:02:34)
strip the bed. You could say simply take
(00:02:38)
off the old sheets, but we often use
(00:02:41)
this word strip. I'm going to strip or
(00:02:45)
strip off this quilt. I'm going to
(00:02:51)
strip off this
(00:02:53)
comforter. It's actually a duvet
(00:02:55)
comforter. You can put a duvet cover
(00:02:57)
over top of it, but I just call it a
(00:02:59)
comforter. And I'm going to take off
(00:03:03)
this sheet. I will explain all about
(00:03:05)
these sheets in just a minute. Now, this
(00:03:07)
I'm going to wash. So, I will put it in
(00:03:11)
my laundry basket.
(00:03:13)
I'm going to also
(00:03:16)
take these pillows.
(00:03:19)
And you might ask, why do you have so
(00:03:21)
many pillows? Are there
(00:03:24)
Why are there four pillows? Well, why
(00:03:28)
would I live in a world where I just
(00:03:30)
need one pillow when I can have two
(00:03:32)
pillows? Right? So, these are not
(00:03:35)
decorative pillows. Some people have
(00:03:37)
decorative pillows um on their bed. I'm
(00:03:40)
not that kind of person. Um, but I like
(00:03:44)
to have one pillow under my head and
(00:03:46)
sometimes I hug a pillow. Sometimes I
(00:03:49)
have that pillow for back support. We
(00:03:53)
call that lumbar support sometimes when
(00:03:55)
I'm sleeping. And I'm going to throw the
(00:03:58)
pillowcases in the laundry basket. Um,
(00:04:02)
let me know. Are you someone who sleeps
(00:04:05)
with more than one pillow?
(00:04:08)
I definitely am. And I feel grateful
(00:04:11)
that I live in a world where I can sleep
(00:04:14)
comfortably, right?
(00:04:16)
Uh so let's take all these off. As you
(00:04:19)
can see, I am not a stickler for
(00:04:23)
matching
(00:04:24)
sheets or matching pillowcases. So these
(00:04:28)
are a matching set. You can see um I
(00:04:31)
think you can see a little bit that
(00:04:33)
these are matching. They have little
(00:04:35)
polka dots on them. But really, whenever
(00:04:38)
I do the sheets, I just grab whatever
(00:04:40)
sheets are clean, whatever pillowcases
(00:04:43)
are clean, and that's what I put on the
(00:04:46)
bed. Some people are pickier than me,
(00:04:49)
but I am not. All right, so next we need
(00:04:52)
to take off the
(00:04:56)
uh fitted sheet. So, this sheet has
(00:04:59)
elastic, and I'm going to take off this
(00:05:02)
fitted fitted sheet. I need to go all
(00:05:06)
the way around the bed and not trip
(00:05:09)
trip over things. So, I will take off
(00:05:11)
this fitted sheet. This is the one that
(00:05:13)
is annoying to put on. Some fitted
(00:05:17)
sheets don't actually fit a bed very
(00:05:20)
well. But this one, this one seems to
(00:05:24)
fit. Okay. So, I'm going to take off
(00:05:27)
this fitted sheet. And the next thing is
(00:05:32)
I need to find the new clean fitted
(00:05:35)
sheet somewhere in here. Note that the
(00:05:38)
pronunciation of this fitted, those T's
(00:05:41)
are going to sound like D's in American
(00:05:44)
English because they're surrounded by
(00:05:46)
vowels. Fitted, not fitted.
(00:05:51)
Fitted. Fitted. That's one of the tricks
(00:05:53)
that makes spoken English sound so fast
(00:05:57)
because we change one letter for
(00:05:58)
another. One word kind of blends into
(00:06:01)
the next word because of all those
(00:06:03)
little tips and tricks. All right, this
(00:06:04)
is my clean fitted sheet. I have two
(00:06:09)
pairs of fitted sheets for this bed,
(00:06:12)
which means one of them can be dirty and
(00:06:14)
the other can be clean and I don't need
(00:06:16)
to do the laundry in order to have a
(00:06:19)
clean set of sheets. So, that's
(00:06:21)
generally the term that we would use.
(00:06:22)
This is a set of sheets, the matching
(00:06:25)
set. This is not a matching set. I don't
(00:06:28)
care. Um, but I'm going to put this on
(00:06:31)
my bed. And you're going to see
(00:06:36)
there's an inside
(00:06:38)
and an outside.
(00:06:40)
And I have to figure out which side is
(00:06:43)
the long side and which side is the
(00:06:46)
short side. I think that's a problem
(00:06:48)
everybody has when they make the bed
(00:06:51)
with this type of uh with these types of
(00:06:54)
sheets. All right, I'm going to tuck it
(00:06:56)
in around here
(00:07:01)
and oh, I did it wrong. I have the long
(00:07:04)
side here. So, what I'm going to do
(00:07:09)
pull that off
(00:07:11)
and find this corner. So, this is the
(00:07:14)
corner of the sheet. I'm going to try to
(00:07:16)
tuck it under the mattress
(00:07:21)
and back here as well. I'm going to tuck
(00:07:25)
this corner around the mattress.
(00:07:30)
And usually the truth is when I make the
(00:07:33)
bed, I have at least one child very
(00:07:36)
excited that there is a big flat jumping
(00:07:38)
surface available and somebody is
(00:07:42)
jumping on the bed while I'm doing this.
(00:07:45)
But
(00:07:46)
I sent everybody outside while I was
(00:07:48)
making this video for you. All right, so
(00:07:52)
I'll get this one tucked in.
(00:07:55)
And you might see we have this lovely
(00:07:58)
patch.
(00:08:00)
I sewed on this patch because I love
(00:08:02)
these sheets. They're so comfortable. I
(00:08:04)
think they're like linen sheets. They're
(00:08:07)
really nice. They're a little wrinkly,
(00:08:09)
but it's okay.
(00:08:11)
And but they got a rip in them.
(00:08:14)
Sometimes natural fibers just aren't as
(00:08:16)
durable as like polyester or more like
(00:08:21)
man-made materials. So these linen
(00:08:23)
sheets, they're just not very durable.
(00:08:26)
But I didn't want to throw them away. I
(00:08:29)
wanted to
(00:08:31)
try to fix them myself. So I cut I had a
(00:08:36)
piece of extra fabric. You can see from
(00:08:40)
these sheets. There was like an extra
(00:08:41)
little square, a little like bag that
(00:08:45)
these sheets came in. And I had saved
(00:08:47)
that. And I cut that little bag. It was
(00:08:50)
not a bag to use to carry stuff. It was
(00:08:53)
just to stuff the sheets in when you buy
(00:08:55)
it. And I sewed it onto
(00:09:00)
the hole. And now there's a nice little
(00:09:02)
patch there. And we can use these sheets
(00:09:04)
again. Hooray.
(00:09:06)
All right. Now that we have the fitted
(00:09:08)
sheet on, let's get the flat sheet.
(00:09:12)
That's what this guy is called. And
(00:09:14)
there is a top and a bottom. You can see
(00:09:18)
there is a thicker seam here to here.
(00:09:24)
This is the seam.
(00:09:26)
This
(00:09:28)
is a thin seam right here. But this
(00:09:32)
thick seam is gonna go at the top
(00:09:35)
ideally.
(00:09:37)
So I'm going to
(00:09:40)
just toss this across the bed
(00:09:46)
and
(00:09:48)
make sure that it's relatively even.
(00:09:53)
We don't want to let Dan have all the
(00:09:55)
sheets, right? I got to have some
(00:09:56)
sheets, too, on my side.
(00:09:59)
All right, that is good enough for me.
(00:10:01)
Usually, I'll tuck the corners in
(00:10:06)
so that they don't
(00:10:08)
get messed up too much. My kids love to
(00:10:11)
hide under my sheets and they play in
(00:10:16)
the blankets, which means that often
(00:10:19)
times all of my sheets and blankets end
(00:10:22)
up on the floor. Maybe it's just fool
(00:10:24)
hearty to think that if I tuck the
(00:10:26)
corner of my sheet in, they'll stay in
(00:10:29)
place. Yeah, I'm probably fooling
(00:10:31)
myself,
(00:10:33)
but that's the way it goes. All right.
(00:10:36)
Next, I'm going to add this duvet cover.
(00:10:38)
Because there's a tag, I try to keep
(00:10:41)
that at the bottom of the bed
(00:10:45)
so that it's not in our faces.
(00:10:50)
And
(00:10:52)
this one pull up like this. And this
(00:10:57)
quilt
(00:11:00)
I'm going to just throw on. Now, this
(00:11:03)
quilt is not a special homemade quilt.
(00:11:08)
We do have a quilt that Dan's greatg
(00:11:11)
grandmother sewed and we often use that
(00:11:14)
on our bed. I did not bring it out for
(00:11:16)
this video.
(00:11:18)
Um, but it that's a very special quilt.
(00:11:21)
Um, you can tell you can tell it's a
(00:11:23)
quilt, not just a blanket, because it
(00:11:26)
has these little squares. And this is
(00:11:29)
just from a company. Nothing very
(00:11:33)
personal, but it still has the squares
(00:11:36)
of fabric that have been sewn together.
(00:11:39)
And
(00:11:40)
in older times, people would save
(00:11:44)
patches of their fabric of their
(00:11:46)
clothing after their clothing um got old
(00:11:49)
and they would make blankets out of it
(00:11:51)
because you had to reuse things more. Um
(00:11:53)
I tried to be thrifty as well, but
(00:11:58)
I don't think I could ever make a quilt
(00:12:00)
unless I really needed to, unless it was
(00:12:03)
a necessity. Um all right, here we go.
(00:12:06)
And next we have our assorted pillow
(00:12:10)
cases. And I'm going to
(00:12:14)
put a couple on. It's interesting. Some
(00:12:17)
pillowcases, I don't know if it's the
(00:12:18)
same in your country, some pillowcases
(00:12:21)
have this little flap here to keep the
(00:12:24)
pillow in. And some pillow cases are
(00:12:28)
just
(00:12:31)
a little opening and you have to shove
(00:12:33)
the pillowcase or the pillow in. This
(00:12:36)
one has a little flap, but
(00:12:39)
it maybe keeps the pillow in better. I'm
(00:12:42)
not sure. All right, let's see if I can
(00:12:45)
shove it in a little bit better.
(00:12:49)
And I know this is Dan's pillow.
(00:12:55)
So, that's going to go up there.
(00:12:59)
This pillow
(00:13:01)
is mine. And I'm going to put the
(00:13:05)
pillowcase on this as well. There is a
(00:13:08)
tag on the pillow, so technically maybe
(00:13:11)
some people would put that at the very
(00:13:13)
end, but I don't care. Like I said, this
(00:13:17)
is my least favorite chore. You see how
(00:13:19)
cool this is? There's like a little flap
(00:13:22)
and then you can pull up that piece so
(00:13:25)
that it stays nice and tucked in there.
(00:13:29)
Great. All right. Now, here's the
(00:13:32)
choice.
(00:13:34)
I can give my second pillow the same
(00:13:37)
color as my first pillow. Let's do it.
(00:13:40)
Let's just be sensible, won't we? Um, I
(00:13:44)
think this pillow case is actually from
(00:13:46)
another set. It doesn't belong with the
(00:13:48)
linen blue sheets, but it's still blue,
(00:13:53)
so that's all right. That's what matters
(00:13:55)
to me. Now, what's worse than doing the
(00:13:57)
sheets on my bed is doing the sheets on
(00:13:59)
my kids' bed.
(00:14:02)
That's the warmest. They have a bunk bed
(00:14:05)
and they like to sleep with a lot of
(00:14:08)
stuffed animals.
(00:14:10)
So,
(00:14:12)
I have them take off all of the stuffed
(00:14:15)
animals from their bed and I ask them to
(00:14:19)
take the sheets off their bed to strip
(00:14:21)
their beds. But it's kind of hard for
(00:14:23)
them at this age, young age, to put
(00:14:28)
their own sheets back on the bed,
(00:14:30)
especially that fitted sheet. So, I'd
(00:14:32)
have to do that. I don't know. It's just
(00:14:35)
a chore I don't like. It's not a big
(00:14:36)
deal, but you know, there's always
(00:14:39)
there's always chores that we don't
(00:14:40)
like, even though they're not a big
(00:14:42)
deal. And then,
(00:14:45)
tada, whenever you do them and they're
(00:14:48)
finished, it feels good. I feel good
(00:14:50)
right now. Have you ever had that happen
(00:14:52)
where you have a chore or a phone call
(00:14:55)
you have to make and you're just
(00:14:57)
dreading it and then you do it and it
(00:15:00)
wasn't actually that bad in the first
(00:15:02)
place? This ish the same for me all the
(00:15:06)
time. Well, thank you for joining me for
(00:15:09)
this uh very intimate daily life chore.
(00:15:14)
Something that I don't enjoy, but I
(00:15:16)
enjoy telling you about. So, I hope that
(00:15:18)
you can go out into the real world,
(00:15:21)
express yourself better, and just feel
(00:15:24)
confident when you speak. That is the
(00:15:27)
whole goal. No matter what you're
(00:15:28)
talking about, maybe you're talking
(00:15:30)
about u making the bed, maybe you're
(00:15:33)
talking about something else, I want you
(00:15:34)
to feel confident when you speak. So,
(00:15:37)
don't forget to download the free PDF
(00:15:39)
worksheet with all of today's
(00:15:41)
vocabulary, key expressions, sample
(00:15:44)
sentences, definitions, and that bonus
(00:15:47)
downloadable audio so that you can
(00:15:49)
listen to this lesson wherever you are.
(00:15:52)
It doesn't matter. You can listen to it
(00:15:53)
while you are also changing your sheets.
(00:15:56)
Don't put it off any longer. Listen to
(00:15:59)
this lesson while you're changing your
(00:16:00)
sheets. And I hope you'll be able to
(00:16:02)
immerse yourself in English, in real
(00:16:04)
life English. So, to get this free
(00:16:06)
worksheet, all you have to do is click
(00:16:08)
on the link in the description. Enter
(00:16:10)
your name and email address and voila,
(00:16:13)
just like that, the free worksheet and
(00:16:16)
audio will land in your email inbox.
(00:16:19)
This is my gift to you. Okay, before you
(00:16:22)
go, I have to show you this beautiful
(00:16:24)
quilt. This is the one I was mentioning.
(00:16:26)
This is the one that my husband's great
(00:16:29)
grandmother made. She sewed all of this
(00:16:33)
by hand. So there's little beautiful
(00:16:35)
stitches for every single one of these
(00:16:38)
colors.
(00:16:39)
And there's stitching even on the white.
(00:16:43)
So here she's made beautiful patterns.
(00:16:46)
H this is what we call a labor of love.
(00:16:50)
